Know Your Enemies: A Monster Guide to PW

11 05 2007

by: Qaddisin

There are more than 1200 monsters in Perfect World, this includes where you can boost up your levels, and more than 1000 unique quests. There are interesting features in monsters too. Wandering around cities is not that frightening, for you can easily recognize the level difference in monsters by the colors in their names. There are 8 monster level color identification. These are:

  • Orange colored names signifies that they are Eight (8) levels above yours

  • Yellow 5-8 levels above yours

  • Beige: 2-5 levels above yours

  • White: 1-2 levels above or below yours

  • Aqua: 3-5 levels below yours

  • Pea Green: 5-8 levels below yours

  • Green: 8-11 levels below yours

  • Dark green: Over 11 levels below yours

Monsters in this world are not just melee fighters. Each has unique skills that they will really cause you grief. With the
Yao jing pets, they can use their skills for their master. But don’t be put off by their abilities for you can easily take a look at their weaknesses and make hunting easy. Their elemental attributes are naturally weak against an opposing element.

The following are the elemental chart:

  • Fire – Fire Resistant, Water Weakness

  • Metal – Metal Resistant, Fire Weakness

  • Wood – Wood Resistant, Earth Weakness

  • Earth – Earth Resistant, Wood Weakness

  • Water – Water Resistant, Metal Weakness

Monster's vulnerabilities

There are easy kill monsters. Some monsters have the attribute “none”, this means that this type of monsters are neutral. No strength and weaknesses (these are fairly straightforward to attack, but are not necessarily weak.) In order to do battle effectively, you should be aware of your state and as well as the monsters properties. Each monster has its own vulnerabilities but mind you, they are way too strong against their own elements. In addition, mob’s characteristics varies upon on their spawn, (these characteristics can also be seen on the monster’s information) The following are main attributes:

  • Magic defense

  • Magic Enhancement (ATK up)

  • Attack Enhancement

  • Defense

  • Weak (less HP)

  • Life Enhancement (More HP)

  • Attack Speed Up

Now nothing can keep you from exploring Perfect World. Knowledge really is power… No kidding! ^_~ Have fun!

PW Stat Builder Alpha

7 05 2007

I chanced upon this nifty script that one of our board users built. The genius behind the application is KepneR, a regular in the Perfect World Forums.

Stat Builder

The script basically emulates a characters attribute development and equips stats. It lets players see how competitive their character would be once they play the game.

You can view the scripts alpha stave at this location

Perfect Pets for a Perfect World!

3 05 2007

by Qaddis

One of the interesting features of Perfect World is the Pet System. Here, pets are not just cute companions that helps with loot but. Perfect world pets can be trained to be stronger (They can level-up), directed to defend you, be your tanker, damage monsters and be even a means of transportation! Now that’s a perfect pet. Not just good to have around but dependable and useful too! Still it’s not that easy to have a useful companion. Taking care that your pet is content and thriving can be gold draining because of the cost of feeding it.

For a Yaojing having a pet is essential for them mostly when they are in combat mode. This Class can summon, tame, cure and resurrect their pets. Initially you can tame 2 pets at level 3, and in order for you to expand your “pet cage” you need to take quests that will add more slots for pets that you can summon. This class can have up to 10 active pets that can be summoned any time. Imagine that~ you can choose different pets to aide you using their different skills and attributes!

Dial up connection and Perfect World

16 04 2007

Over the weekend I tried accessing Perfect World over a dial up connection and test how it performs with limited throughput. It was difficult at first because my client wasn’t connecting to the game. Turns out outside IP was blocked, so I had to have it opened with our IT for this test.

I used a blast internet dial up card for this test and measured throughput using the speak easy bandwidth meter (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)

Perfect World Bandwidth status

It normally takes two to three seconds after logging-in to connect to the game but with a dial up it would take around 9-12 seconds.

Once inside the game, everything was the same. I didn’t have any lag problems especially with all the monsters around. Tried jump, swim and areas where there are a lot of monsters to stress my connection. The impact of a dial up connection wasn’t felt.

As a caveat though, I am playing a client with no other players in the area. I’m sure there will be lag especially if you are spawning to and from a town which is usually loaded with a lot of characters.

What this test illustrates is that loading time for the game is faster than a battle net, that maybe dial up would still be doable if you are outside town or areas where there are less character congestion.

I’ll be doing another round of tests using dial up once there are more players in the area.

Secure Log In

15 04 2007

Logging into games in a public area – be it a net café you don’t normally play in or if you’re using a shared computer – normally requires a fair amount of caution. Players would have to veer away from prowling eyes and malicious key loggers or the more discreet eye loggers. Perfect World took this into consideration by incorporating an on-screen keyboard (OSK) as added option when logging into the game.

OSK Login

This OSK provides additional security when you login since keystrokes are not logged by key loggers and any malicious neighbor would have to look really close to see what you clicked.

The OSK window becomes available once your mouse pointer moves to the password box. The OSK appears at the bottom of the screen and looks just like a standard keyboard. It is smaller than the standard OSK available in Windows (Run –> osk)

This OSK feature, in addition to the usual manner you secure your account, makes stealing accounts from Perfect World just a level more difficult.

Graphic Detail Levels

14 04 2007

Perfect World has five basic levels of graphic detail; each having a preset level that can be adjusted to further customize the graphic rendering. The detail goes from 1 (low wood detail, ground refinement etc. ) to 5 (high atmosphere details)

I switched from one graphic setting to another to illustrate how Perfect World will look like under these presets. The following are actual screen shots of the different levels. Pay special attention to the water and waterfalls.

Level 2

2nd Level Graphic Preset

Level 3

3rd level graphic preset

Level 4

See the difference?

Note that this is Perfect World running on a 64MB Video Card, which means that you can get more detail with a higher setup than mine.
