Tales From the Back End # 1 – Basic Gameplay Overview

by: Masamuneko

Hallo, ladies and gentlefolk! Here’s an update from the back-end grunts who are working hard on creating your Perfect World.

Where to start?… This game is just so huge that we really don’t know what to speak of first. This one supposes that we might as well get down to the nitty-gritty of any MMOG – how to advance.

By the way, we won’t get into the relative strengths and weaknesses of the various classes – this sort of thing is subjective to the player, and is heavily influenced by her ideas of the perfect class (coupled with the perfect playing style) and thus cannot be expressed without the author’s biases coming into play. You’ll understand what we mean as we go along. =^_^=

Leveling – Quests

The folks from Perfect World Team were not kidding when they said that PW was quest-driven. Completing quests in Perfect World actually gives much, much more EXP than killing the monsters needed to complete the quest would give. You can actually go out into the world with a list of quests to do, gain a level by fulfilling the conditions, then gain one or more levels when you return to the NPCs to cash in the quests. (Oneesan, our current leader of the pack, advanced from level 17 to 19 without killing a single monster)

Wait, Neko-san! If it’s true that quests give a lot of EXP, won’t that mean that people will be competing for quest monsters and loots?

Ah, here’s the beauty of the system. When a member of a party kills a quest monster or collects quest loot, all members of the party with the same quest are credited. (Regular loot drops and resource items are not covered by this system, of course) Even better, kills are credited to all the quests that require the same monster. So if you take Quest 1, which requires you to hunt Monster A, Quest 2 which requires you to find item B (which so happens to drop from Monster A) and then take Quest 3 that requires common drops that happen to drop from Monster A as well, you can theoretically complete all three quests by killing roughly thirty monsters of one type.

One last thing about the quests – the writers did a good job on the stories. Most of the Human quests have plot lines from those soap operas that show in the afternoon. If we can manage to keep the flavor of the original scripts after their translation from Chinese, the players will be in for an interesting time.

Well, that’s it for now. =^^= We’ll be back in a few days with more info as we double and triple check everything we’ve done today to make sure we did it right.

Current leveling stats: 48 hours played

Level reached : 38

Class : Human Fa Shih.

My flying sword is the 1337!

yup.
One of the major skill that everyone should take note of is the crafting ability. we’ll expand on this in the coming post and you can basically gain levels by crafting.

@ acidgrin
alright, here’s one.
You can have better items/armors/weapons with crafting than with getting them from NPC’s.
Items crafted and/or dropped from quests have sockets where you can place items to upgrade the attribute.
Will go in game later to get some screen caps

can we have like a rough estimate as to when the CBT and OBT will start? i’m sure you’re working hard on it, but it would be nice to know if we are expecting another month or so before it starts, or if it will be skipped all together, since a few days more and the previously announced sched for OBT is up. i believe you have spent enough time working on the translations, and info on how big the remaining work is to have an idea on how much more work and time is needed.

i’m sure that i speak on behalf of the awaiting public when i say it’s ok if you work on it as much as you need to… but it would be better if we have an idea when it would be ready.

more power to you guys!

Thanks for the support

Why not just release the game now and just fix any bugs later via weekly maintenance.. hehehe

20 04 2007
Keouge

ok pala kht 2lungan ka ng high lvl char para mag quest…thx for the update sir

20 04 2007
nocturnalsun

@ MP
I wish it was that simple
Small fixes would go to a weekly maintenance
But bug iterations would mean that it would need more development time.
Bug iterations in some instance would be more effective than since correcting things in batches would be more effective than doing it in iteration

Okay, but the game itself is not new. The PW Programmers in China would have found any serious gameplay-related show stoppers or errors by now. I believe the main goal of your testings right now is not to discover any “show stoppers” but for any localization issues right? (the translated text).

20 04 2007
MP

Correction from previous post: I mean would have “fixed” any serious gameplay-related show stoppers

20 04 2007
nocturnalsun

@MP
It is actually new. Since the Chinese version is local and they have a different version from that of the international version (Phil, Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam)
which is actually new. All countries will have the same version and some bugs would be unique on how each country would implement it. This means that each country would have to learn the game simultaneously.
Localization is just one (big) facet.

Okay but I guess the game is playable now, and if the opinion of the majority of players is as good as mine, I believe they wont have any problem having some bugs once in a while – while in Open Beta Phase. I think its better than to overshoot the deadline bigtime. What do you think? hehehe

20 04 2007

Again, correction on previous post: “I think its better than to overshoot the INITIAL deadline bigtime”

Pls forgive my excitement.. lolz

20 04 2007
nocturnalsun

@ MP
I do hope so, really
i do hope also that a lot of the players are as mature as you are in looking at bugs as opportunities to improve
crossing my fingers on overshooting the deadline

Thanks for the compliment. I discover and fix bugs myself coz I am into this kind of profession so I know the pains of the job very well. Its just that my reasoning has been overshadowed by my own excitement of the game that nothing else matters now other than playing the game now (sounding immature. hahaha).

I’ve been trying to justify things hoping that I might just change your mind, and in-game, its called “asa”. LOLZ

if it’s just the minor bugs, it’s ok to have it fixed on weekly maintenance… but if a major bug is to found by the time the game is already released, this will really hurt a lot… big bugs @ later period = cost lots of time and effort, considering you need to debug it, re-test it, do regression testing /pif… can even result to rollbacks, etc. so it’s good to hear that you guys are really trying to make sure that no major bug is unseen… so it’s quite ok to wait a little longer…

but please, don’t release later than 1st week of may ^.^

patience has its limits ^.^

WOW!!! 48 hours level 38? that’s nice by doing quest.. kakaiba tlga ang PW! unique ^_^ i hope ma i-release na ang CBT pra Open Beta! wwwwwwwooooo!!!!!!!

No offense sir but i think this is also true with other MMOs:

“Ah, here’s the beauty of the system. When a member of a party kills a quest monster or collects quest loot, all members of the party with the same quest are credited.”

One more thing sir, would coaching kills the thrill of the game. I mean, if i were a noob and wanna go level fast through quest, i would just have to tap a highleveld friend to coach or help me so i can finish my quests faster than moving on alone. I think this could defeat the purpose of handling single player quest…the thrill, excitement….the challenge.

Again, sorry if I offended someone and more power to PW-Ph Staff!

@ viewsonic7
agree. it’s not offensive don’t worry.
each player has it’s own motivation for playing online games. Nick Yee sums it up in his study on player motivations and boils it down to 5; relationship, immersion, grief, achievement and leadership.
Some players would opt to for example have a high degree of level so that they can go straight up PVP the fastest time or probably get the equipment that he longs for since it requires a certain level. Here they could fall into our local category of power levelers as well. That’s his game style, it might not be the best or it might not be as true to the intentions of those that immersed with the game but it is still his motivation for playing.
People who are immersed with the game on the other hand do find enjoyment with fulfilling the requisite items for the quest on his own efforts. That’s your motivation for playing as well. You can veer away from party raid or quests that drop your quest requirement.
What this all say is that there are several factors in the game that answers to everyone’s motivation. Yes you can PL all the way to the nth level, but then again the game does not rely on level as indicator for a players strength. You have a combination of levels, chi, soul, skills, items that will be critical to your progress of the game. In the end, you can be what you want to be.

patience on time to market vs tolerance to the game quality
that’s what we’re balancing now

you can actually get to level 20 without any grinding. ehehe.. from level 14 to 19 . Some NPC quest just require you to bring this something to other npc or to any town then go back. And thats it! ye gain as much as 80 percent of experience. HEHE easy level 30. ^_^ flying sword agad. weeeeee.. excited nako. LOL

thanks sir for the reply though my reply is quite late. It was informative. I went for a little summer break at the beach for 2 days to get my mind off computers. I know you’re busy but i hope you can find time to enjoy the summer before it ends. (off topic)

Anyway, I hope you can post url of the study of Mr. Nick Yee. Im interested of reading it. Thanks again for the reply.

I read something about a x2 exp feature. Does this multiply the exp you get from quests, too?

And doesn’t anyone else find huge flying swords a bit bizarre? o_o

23 04 2007
Masamuneko

No, quest rewards are not multiplied.

Flying swords are a staple of the Wu Xia genre, and can be found in many Chinese movies.
